Breakbulk cargo is general cargo carried outside ISO standard containers and handled as individual units or identifiable groups. UNECE trade terminology uses this distinction, while UN/CEFACT guidance contrasts loose dry bulk with breakbulk that may be unitized, bundled or palletized.

The defining feature is not the commodity but the handling form. Steel can move as breakbulk coils or bundles; fertilizer can move as breakbulk bags; machinery can move as crates or separate pieces.

Common forms

  • bundles and strapped packs;
  • bags and flexible bulk packages handled as units;
  • pallets and skids;
  • crates, cases and drums;
  • coils, plates, pipes and fabricated steel;
  • machinery and project pieces;
  • timber packs or other unitized products.

The same shipment may contain different unit types, so the inquiry needs an item schedule.

Breakbulk is not dry bulk

Dry bulk is loose material handled by mass or volume without individually counted packages. Breakbulk is counted, marked or controlled as units. This changes lifting, tally, condition survey, storage, transport and claims evidence.

Breakbulk is not automatically project cargo

Project cargo usually involves exceptional engineering, coordination or transport constraints. It is often breakbulk, but an ordinary pallet or bundle is breakbulk without becoming project cargo. The distinction affects the depth of technical qualification.

Information needed by a terminal

Provide:

  • commodity and unit type;
  • unit count and lot marks;
  • verified dimensions and weights;
  • packaging and condition standard;
  • lifting points and restrictions;
  • stacking, dunnage and weather rules;
  • vessel and inland transport interfaces;
  • survey and tally requirements;
  • customs and transport documents;
  • exception contacts.
